Rich Johnston

Rich Johnston has been a sworn officer for 20 years. He began his career with the Ontario Provincial Police in Northern Ontario in 1997. He subsequently joined the Barrie Police Service in 1998. While beginning in Operational Services (Uniform), his background has primarily been in emergency response, with 15 years assigned to the Barrie Police Service Tactical Unit. While serving in the tactical unit as an operator, Rich held the position of team leader until being promoted to a Sergeant on the team. Rich then spent time attached to uniform services as a patrol Sergeant until being moved to the planning and research section of the Service. There he assisted in the planning and creation of the Service’s Annual Report and current three-year Strategic Plan. Rich was promoted to Staff Sergeant in 2016 and has worked in uniform services, the communications unit and executive services.

Rich currently holds the rank of Inspector as is assigned to Operational Support Services. He oversees the community services unit, traffic unit, marine unit, tactical support unit, canine unit, court services unit and the communications unit. 



Rich has an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s University and a Master’s degree in Leadership Studies from Guelph University’s Business and Economics department.



In 2018 Rich was nominated by the Canadian Society for Evidence Based Policing for inclusion in the Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science (L.E.A.D.S) scholar program based out of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
